Kris Hammons interview on the Stand Up Dude Podcast
Kris Hammons on Stand Up Dude

Let’s be honest: if you’re looking for fluff or feel-good platitudes, you’re in the wrong place. At Stand Up Dude, we’re interested in men chasing meaning over comfort. In our latest episode, we sat down with Kris Hammons to discuss grit, fatherhood, faith, and how to stand tall when you feel like you’re losing.

Many men today are fried, overwhelmed by expectations and blasted by uncertainty. Whether you’re struggling with the pressures of fatherhood, a health diagnosis, or a setback at work, we get it. Kris’s story—marked by multiple surgeries and a ten-month NICU stay for his son—reveals what it actually looks like to build resilience with Christ at the center.

Redefining Grit

Most guys think grit means "white-knuckling" it: staying silent and powering through. Kris argues that’s just surviving. Real grit isn't about gripping the steering wheel tighter; it’s about loosening your grip and facing what’s in front of you.

True grit looks like:

  • Naming the struggle: Stop "toughing it out" in isolation.

  • Leaning into faith: Trusting God even when certainty collapses.

  • Facing the pain: Rejecting fake optimism to deal with reality.

From Isolation to Brotherhood

Ignoring your pain doesn't build a legacy; it breeds regret. Kris realized in the NICU that the real test wasn't physical endurance, but emotional surrender. As a gospel-centered man, your job isn't to deny the valley, but to show up in the middle of it.

How to cultivate purpose today:

  1. Be present: Put the phone down and engage with your family and your faith.

  2. Break the silence: Share your struggle with a trusted friend. Isolation is a trap.

  3. Practice gratitude: Perspective shifts when you name three things you’re thankful for.

  4. Find your tribe: You need a community that pursues growth, not just venting.

  5. Get honest with God: Faith isn't pretending you're okay; it’s asking for help when you aren't.

The Stakes are High

If you keep coasting, five years from now you'll be facing broken relationships and a squandered legacy. But when you choose to name your pain and step into brotherhood, you flip the script. You move from sleepwalking to standing tall.

Your challenge for today:

  • Write down two things you’re grateful for and one thing you need help with.

  • Text a brother and ask for prayer.

  • Stop waiting for "good intentions" and take action.
