Ever felt like all you do is grind? Like you spend your whole life trying to be enough, do enough, and prove you have what it takes, but it's never quite enough? You lead, you hustle, you try to do the right thing for your wife, your kids, your job. When things don't add up, when you can't shake the empty ache, the secret
habit, or the quiet burnout, what do you do? You double down. You try harder. We get it. This episode, we pulled apart the myth that more effort and striving is a viable solution for men. The reality? Most of us are living out of our own worn-out strength, not from Christ’s life. The result isn’t purpose, it’s exhaustion. Today, we’re calling out the lie. Purpose for men doesn’t start with what you do. It starts with who you’re connected to. Let's talk about what actually gives men the strength to lead a life that lasts.
Why the Old “Try Harder” Game Fails
Most men think the answer is more self-control. More hustle. Get the schedule optimized, try another productivity hack, work on another “bad habit.” We buy into the “producer mentality”, that our value is what we can make happen.
It’s exhausting because it puts all the weight on you. As if God’s waiting on the sidelines, arms folded, checking your stats.
“We think God will love me if I obey, rather than because he loves me, I obey... What if the real issue is this one thing? You're trying to live the Christian life without the life of Christ.”
If your faith feels like a spiritual refueling station every Sunday, and you run on empty by midweek, it’s not because you’re busted. It’s because you’re disconnected from your real Source. This “try harder” approach has a cost: It turns purpose into performance. That’s a fake win.
Purpose for Men Starts with Connection, Not Performance
Here’s the truth Jesus laid out:
“Apart from me, you can do nothing.” John 15:5
That’s not poetic or sentimental, It’s the truth. You can run everything on muscle and willpower, but eventually, you snap. Not because you failed, but because you’re cutting yourself off from the lifeline. A branch doesn’t “work hard” to push out fruit, it simply stays connected to the vine.
Here’s why connection changes everything:
Your job isn’t to “create” purpose. Your purpose comes from being alive in Christ, then bearing the kind of fruit only He can grow: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness...
Obedience isn’t about earning points, it’s a response to love you already have.
Faith isn’t just a Sunday moment or emotional experience, it’s active dependence.
We’ve all tried faking spiritual fruit by taping plastic apples to a dead tree. That’s called burnout. Nobody needs another religious mask or spiritual act.
How to Stay Connected to Your Purpose as a Man
If we’re honest, “abide in Christ” has always sounded a little…floaty. Mystical. Like: “Isn’t that for monks or guys with nothing to do?”
We made it simple. If you want a purpose for men that’s worth something:
Get into the Bible for yourself. Not just for head knowledge, but to actually let Christ’s words shape you. When you do, you'll discover something amazing as you read the Word of God; it starts reading you, revealing the truth about you and your need to be connected to the source of life.
Stop asking, “What do I feel?” Ask, “What did Jesus say?”
Don’t try to manufacture feelings. Focus on staying in His presence, even when you feel nothing. Real fruit grows slowly, over time.
Remember, abiding isn’t passive. It’s active dependence. You make room for God every day, not out of duty, but because you know you need Him.
During the episode, Stew brought it home like this:
“Awareness that I am in need, that I am dependent upon him, and without him it does not work… To be grateful for what he's already doing and has done. That's a pretty good balance that keeps you abiding.”
If you see selfishness, anger, or apathy popping up everywhere, it’s a sign. You aren’t doomed, you’re probably just disconnected. Most men don’t crash and burn all at once. They slowly rot, and nobody notices until it’s ugly. Want purpose? Stay connected to Christ like your life depends on it, BECAUSE IT DOES.
Purpose for Men: Four Daily Rhythms That Keep You Strong
Try these. Every single day.
God’s Word: Read and re-read until His truth overrides your lies.
Prayer: Not fancy words, just raw honesty. Wrestling, confessing, repenting, asking, and thanking.
Surrender: Hands open, not clinched. Admit you’re not running the show.
Brotherhood: Men who know your story and call you out when you drift. No one-man armies. Find your few and stick with your crew.
Anytime you feel dry, go back to these. Don’t fake fruit, get reconnected. Tim said like this during the show:
“The Christian life is not just trying harder for Jesus. It is staying connected to Jesus.”
When you’re rooted, the fruit eventually shows, real purpose, real change. Lose connection and you’ll feel it.
Redefining Success: Are You Growing or Just Busy?
Stop grading yourself by how much you’re doing. Start asking: Am I seeing actual fruit?Love, patience, real peace, self-control; these show up when you abide. When they’re missing, something’s off at the root.
Chasing success without God means you’ll end up with a good-looking life that’s hollow inside. We’re not letting you settle for that. Not you, not us.
If you’ve faked it for years with church attendance, fake fruit, and a nice-guy image, and you’re sick and tired of being stuck, ask Jesus to make you alive, right now. No script. No magic word. Surrender your plans, your performance, your mess, and receive actual life.
Next Steps
Purpose for men doesn’t come from how well you perform. It comes from who you’re connected to. Abide in Christ, stay connected and dependent and the rest will follow. Not instantly, not perfectly, but over time. Here’s the call: Are you willing to stop taping on fake fruit and finally connect to the only source that gives life? What needs to change in your daily rhythm to actually abide, not just perform?
